Patterns of care, England 2022

The factsheet for England describes patterns of care near the end of life related to 4 major conditions:

  • cancer
  • cardiovascular disease
  • dementia
  • respiratory disease

It also includes experimental statistics describing:  

  • the number of people who died in 2022
  • their causes of death
  • demographic characteristics (age, sex, ethnic group, deprivation quintile)
  • hospital admissions
  • length of stay in hospital
  • place of death

Care homes

The factsheets for Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) includes data on:

  • monthly trends in the number of deaths in care homes and care home residents who died elsewhere
  • projections of future need for palliative and end of life care in care homes
  • most recent care home bed rate
  • care home staff vacancy rate and staff having started or completed the Care certificate
  • care home residents with a recorded preferred place of death

Place of death

These factsheets are for (ICBs). They provide the most recent data available on trends in place of death and compares this with the pattern seen in 2019 as a baseline.

It compares ICB and England data from 2019 to 2023 for:

  • the number and percentage of deaths in hospitals (acute or community, not psychiatric)
  • at home
  • in care homes
  • in hospices (not community)
  • other places
