Profile menu

Users can move between different Profiles by using a dropdown menu next to the Profile name. Profiles with GP-level data show CQC ratings for GP practices. These are available from Data view > Population.

Reports

Where profiles have Reports, these are now all accessible via Data view > Reports. Download, which used to include certain types of downloadable reports in the past is now exclusively for data.

With the new financial year, several CCGs have merged into new entities and Northamptonshire, with its seven districts, has been replaced by two Unitary Authorities. The new generation of entities, including the new deprivation deciles, is now available in Fingertips and can be applied to any profile.

Changes to the cookie policy, users can opt-in to share information about their usage of Fingertips.

Confidence intervals

Lower and upper confidence intervals (CIs) (95% and 99.8%) are now also calculated when an indicator value is aggregated from all known lower geographies. The CIs for aggregated values are available and can be used for statistical comparison.

Bookmarking specific views

User choices such asdata display or geographies are now captured and contained in URL strings. This means users can now bookmark and share specific views without the need to take screenshots.

Search

A significant improvement to the search algorithm on Fingertips, which now provides better and more specific results.

CCG mergers

Addition of a new area type – Primary Care Networks (PCNs)

These organisational units are now available in Fingertips as a new area type and area grouping option. Please note this geography is marked as provisional and additional information can be found in the notes.

Details on how to cite Fingertips were added to the grey area at the bottom of each Profile page as well as to the Download tab.

Refinements to the ‘new data’ flag

The green flag is now only displayed when data for at least 25% of areas within an area type have changed so that a minor change (for example, a correction) does not mislead users.

Local Authority Health Profiles

The format of these reports has changed, and they are now published in html, not PDFs.

2nd Respiratory Atlas of Variation launched

This tool helps users identify unwarranted variation in risk factors for respiratory diseases as well as assess the value of healthcare provided at an individual and population level.

Updated population pyramid

This data view is now accompanied by a data table, which lists the population counts in each age band presented in the pyramid.

Populations are now also auto generated for area lists, deprivation deciles and CIPFA nearest neighbours and hence can be also provided as comparators in addition to the typical, higher geography options. [RE1] [FP2] [RE3]

CIPFA nearest neighbours

These were added to benchmarking options. If an average value can be calculated, users can compare indicator values for one area against its 15 most similar local authorities (statistical neighbours).

All exported chart images now consistently include the title.

This Profile replaces the Older People’s Health and Wellbeing Profile. It contains a wide range of indicators on topics relevant to our health as we age.

Hide/show legend

To make more room for the charts you can now hide the legend area by clicking the Hide legend link at the bottom of the grey navigation area.

Averages calculated for CIPFA nearest neighbours and other ranked 'similar areas' categorisations

This function depends on the value type and the available data. The average is calculated over the area and its comparators.

Edit link next to the title of bespoke Indicator lists

Clicking the 'edit' link next to the title of your bespoke Indicator lists is an easy way to return to the indicator list management page for refinements or other changes.

Data table to accompany Inequalities trend chart

Inequality trend charts can be very data rich and with criss-crossing categories it can be hard to read the details. The data table shown below the line chart will make this task much easier.

Geography changes

  • CCGs for April 2019 boundaries introduced and CCGs pre-April 2017 retired
  • NHS regions - local offices (aka sub-regions) updated
  • Wards updated
  • New boundary files for changed maps uploaded

STP boundaries updated to July 2018

In July 2018 three STPs merged into one. This change was finally applied to Fingertips and area mappings etc. have been adjusted accordingly.

Bespoke area lists: averages included in trends and download files

On-the-fly generated average values are now shown for bespoke area lists on trend tables and csv files where the value type and the available data allows those to be calculated.

Compare areas – users can toggle between ‘Funnel plot plus table’ - view or ‘table only’

Previously the profile owners had to choose for the whole profile whether they wanted to include funnel plots or not. If funnel plots were shown, the ‘all areas in England’ option was not available. Users can now toggle between the two views although a funnel plot can only be drawn if the data are available.

New local authority areas

In preparation for the local authority boundary changes Fingertips has been set up to show old and new geographies as required. Profile owners can populate the new areas and decide to include the new area option.

In addition to the option to download charts as images the user can now also download the specific set of data that is displayed.

Quintile orientation

If data are coloured according to which quintile of ranked values they belong to (instead of statistical testing) it is now possible to apply a judgement and to decide if high is good or low is good for an indicator. These indicators are shown in shades of purple. Where no judgement is appropriate the quintiles are shown in shades of blue.

England as an area type in its own right

Up to now Fingertips has treated England as area grouping or parent area. England values can now be shown on their own which is useful for indicators that have only England values and no geographical breakdown.

Showing 2 confidence levels at once

If data is available, and the profile owners choose this option we can now display two shades for better/higher and worse/lower depending on the value being beyond the 99.8% limits or between 95% and 99.8% limits.

Small area maps

If data is available it can now be displayed on the map for MSOAs and Wards.

Area lists

You can create your own lists of areas to focus on the data that is most relevant to you.

New data highlighted

Newly added or updated data is now highlighted for certain indicators. The period for which data is considered new will vary for each profile but is usually between 1-3 months.
